Relationship between collateral flow and exercise performance in Fontan patients: an exercise CMR study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background We have recently demonstrated that Fontan geometry and power loss have important relationships with exercise performance. Systemic to pulmonary arterial collateral flow (CollF) has been shown to be an important consideration in single ventricle physiology. However, the effect of exercise on CollF and the relationship between CollF and exercise performance have yet to be studied systematically. We utilized an exercise CMR protocol to investigate the relationship between exercise and CollF.

CMR-based planning of catheter and surgical interventions for aortopulmonary collaterals before Fontan completion: pilot study of 5 cases
Background Aortopulmonary collateral arteries (APCAs) are frequently observed in single ventricle patients. However those patients require staged surgery toward Fontan completion, APCAs are believed to cause evil situations against Fontan circulation such as impediment of anterograde pulmonary blood flow, volume overload for single ventricle and decrease in systemic blood flow. Therefore, inter...
متن کاملSystemic-to-pulmonary collateral flow, as measured by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, is associated with acute post-Fontan clinical outcomes.
BACKGROUND Systemic-pulmonary collateral (SPC) flow occurs commonly in single ventricle patients after superior cavo-pulmonary connection, with unclear clinical significance. We sought to evaluate the association between SPC flow and acute post-Fontan clinical outcomes using a novel method of quantifying SPC flow by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. METHODS AND RESULTS All patients wh...
متن کاملEffect of respiration on cardiac filling at rest and during exercise in Fontan patients: A clinical and computational modeling study
Due to the absence of a sub-pulmonary ventricle, the Fontan circulation is sensitive to respiration-induced changes in intrathoracic pressure. However, the importance of a ‘respiratory pump’ in creating forward flow remains controversial. We aimed at evaluating the effect of respiration on ventricular filling during exercise using clinical data and computational modeling predictions.Ten Fontan ...
متن کاملWhat Limits Cardiac Performance during Exercise in Normal Subjects and in Healthy Fontan Patients?
Exercise is an important determinant of health but is significantly reduced in the patient with a univentricular circulation. Normal exercise physiology mandates an increase in pulmonary artery pressures which places an increased work demand on the right ventricle (RV). In a biventricular circulation with pathological increases in pulmonary vascular resistance and/or reductions in RV function, ...
متن کاملبازتوانی ورزشی در بیماری قلبی؛ یک مطالعه مروری سیستماتیک
Introduction: Cardiac diseases are of of the most common diseases in the world. Patients with these diseases should be treated for a long time and cardiac rehabilitation must be performed for them in order to return to an active life. There is an inverse relationship between the amount of physical activity and mortality rate in patients with cardiac diseases. Exercise-based rehabilitation is an...
